Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East is excited to announce the selection of 16 new families in to the Homeownership Program! These 16 families include 73 people, 34 of which are children under the age of 15. Five of the families have a member with a disability, and will work with Habitat to build and buy an ADA home that meets their needs. Another five of the families come from subsidized housing. When these families purchase their Habitat home, they move up the housing continuum, becoming homeowners and freeing up spots for other families to get subsidized housing opportunities. The majority of these families will be building their homes at Helensview, our newest build site slated to break ground later this year. Located in the Cully neighborhood, Helensview will eventually become the homes of 21 local, working-class families.
As part of our holistic approach to working in Cully, we have partnered with Hacienda CDC, a Cully-based nonprofit which will provide workforce training for local individuals on three of the homes as a way to build skills and capacity in Cully. Habitat is excited to work with these families on the build site and in our ReStores and offices as they complete their 500 hours of sweat equity and realize the dream of affordable homeownership!
