Individual Volunteers

Sign up to volunteer at our three ReStore locations or one of our build sites

Building dreams takes lots of behind-the-scenes work from dedicated volunteers. We have a variety of ways that community members can get engaged with us, no tool belt needed.

ReStore Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the heart of the ReStore, playing a vital role in Habitat’s local homebuilding mission. Day-to-day tasks vary, but may include assisting customers, organizing the store, processing donations, repairing donated items, and more! Schedule a ReStore orientation through the registration option above.

Shifts: 10 am-2 pm and/or 2 pm-6 pm, every day of the week

Commitment: We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least 2 shifts per month.

Requirements: Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and pass a background check. Volunteers age 14-15 must be accompanied by a chaperone age 21 or older. Volunteers age 16-17 must have a waiver signed in person by their parent or guardian.

Current Need: Gresham and Portland locations. Opportunities also available in Beaverton.

Individuals who are looking to complete community service hours can do so at any ReStore location.

Construction Volunteer Opportunities

Daily Volunteer

Thousands of volunteers come together each year to help Habitat build homes – nail by nail, board by board! Volunteers work on nearly every facet of home construction, helping with dozens of tasks ranging from painting and tiling to framing and insulating. Volunteers do not need to have any prior experience in construction. Our work would not be possible without the support of volunteers! Register above.

Shifts: 8:30 am-3 pm, days vary by build site

Commitment: We are looking for volunteers who can commit to a full shift.

Requirements: Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, pass a background check, and have an up-to-date waiver.

Current Need: King City Commons (south of Tigard) and Century Commons (Hillsboro)

Outreach Volunteer Opportunities

Do you feel passionate about Habitat’s mission and love speaking with people? Join the outreach volunteer team where you can greet community members and share information about Habitat and its programs. You will be equipped with the materials and knowledge of Habitat before your first event!

Shifts: Varies based on event

Commitment: We are looking for volunteers who are available for at least two outreach events per year.

Requirements: Volunteer must be at least 18 years of age and pass a background check, and attend one virtual orientation.

Current need: Weekend availability

Specialized Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Attorney

Supervisor: Loretta Kelly, Lending and Compliance Manager
Timeframe: Ongoing volunteer commitment, infrequent hours as needed

All homes built and sold by Habitat for Humanity Portland Region are designed for lasting affordability. This means that the homes are affordable not only to the first homebuyer, but to subsequent buyers for generations to come. An Affordability Covenant or Land Lease is recorded against each home to ensure lasting affordability. Our partner, Proud Ground, will manage the resale of the homes.

Habitat believes that it is important for homebuyers to review the affordability documents with a “disinterested third party” who is able to answer questions about the documents. Habitat is looking for attorneys who will review the Affordability Covenant, along with the Warranty Deed and the Trust Deed with the homebuyers.

Habitat provides a list of available attorneys to the homebuyers, and they schedule with the attorney of their choice as they near their closing date. The meeting will last approximately 90 minutes. Some Habitat homebuyers are not comfortable speaking English. In that case, Habitat/Proud Ground will provide an interpreter for those homebuyers that request one. Interpretation services may add 15 minutes to this timeframe.

Habitat and Proud Ground staff will provide an overview of the documents and answer any questions for the attorneys before any meetings with homebuyers.

Responsibilities:

  • Review permanent affordability documents, typically an affordability covenant or a land lease, warranty deed and trust deed, with homebuyers
  • Answer homebuyer questions about the affordability documents
  • Sign and notarize a document stating that you reviewed the documents with the homebuyers

Required:

  • Familiarity with Oregon real estate and condominium law
  • Willingness to work with first time homebuyers
  • Willingness to work with homebuyers needing interpreters
  • Ongoing volunteer commitment, partnership of one year or more
