The Homeowner Leadership Council (HLC) launched in 2024 to create space for homeowners to connect, learn, and help shape the future of Habitat for Humanity Portland Region. Members believe in uplifting others while building better lives for themselves, their families, and future generations.
What we do
HLC members have played an advisory role on Homeownership program policies, tabled and spoken at events, and shared their perspectives with new homebuyers. They draw from their lived experiences to seek solutions, create positive change, and help others overcome barriers to homeownership.
The Council is now guiding the launch of the Neighborhood Roots Fund, a small grants program. The goal is to provide financial investment and tactical support for projects that cultivate connection, trust, and belonging within Habitat neighborhoods.

Neighborhood Roots Fund
This program will provide flexible, accessible funding up to $850 per grant, to support resident-led projects that cultivate connection, trust, and belonging.
- Bring neighbors together through cultural celebrations and community events.
- Activate shared spaces with block parties, community gardens, or pop-up activities.
- Connect generations through projects that bring people of all ages together.
- Build community resilience by strengthening neighbor-to-neighbor support.
Whether you’re planning something big or small, creativity and collaboration are encouraged.
Become a member
HLC members are selected through an application process. They reflect the racial, ethnic cultural, and geographic diversity of Habitat homeowners across the Portland region. The Council Curriculum is trauma-informed and participation looks different for each person.
- Council members must be a current Habitat homeowner of a least one year.
- Members meet monthly and receive an annual stipend for their time and valued service.
- Members serve a two-year term with an option to serve in an Eldership role in year three.
If you’re looking to build leadership skills and create positive change, apply today! We accept HLC member applications year-round but will begin the selection process for the next cohort in mid-2026.
