Freshly finished floors, brightly painted walls, and shelves being built — our team has been working hard in Tigard to get the new ReStore ready. It’s on track for a grand opening in April!
Like our three other locations, the Tigard ReStore will sell new and gently used household goods and building materials at discounted prices. Every item donated and every purchase helps fund Habitat’s homebuilding and home repair programs across the Portland region.
Sneak peek inside
With large windows and sliding glass doors, the new space feels even larger than its 18,500 square feet. The beautiful interior will celebrate Habitat’s mission. Not only are the walls painted in Habitat blue and orange, but they’ll also display video of our work on big screen TVs.
Of course, those monitors were donated. And many of the shelves and fixtures were gleaned from chain stores that recently closed.
“We’re repurposing a lot, you know, true to our nature,” said Julie Carter, Vice President of Retail Operations at Habitat for Humanity Portland Region.
Together, the current ReStores keep about 8,000 tons of reusable materials out of local landfills each year. Julie estimates the new location will help divert an additional 3,000 tons annually, making an even greater environmental impact.
Donated home goods do good
The Tigard ReStore is conveniently close to I-5, near Bridgeport Village. Its drive-around donation dock will make it easy for people to drop off items. And a large “ReStore” sign will face Upper Boones Ferry Road to help raise visibility.
That’s one of the big challenges for a new ReStore. “Just making sure people know we’re there,” Julie said. “So we can keep filling the store.”
About 95% of items in a Portland Region ReStore are donated from individuals and businesses in the community. For businesses, the ReStores offer sustainable solutions for overstock and returned products.
Julie feels lucky to live in a region where people are very aware of the need to reuse and recycle. And she’s grateful to ReStore donors, who choose to turn their old belongings into new, affordable homes.
“I think that there is a group of people that would rather go that extra mile to donate to a cause like ours,” Julie said. “We have a really awesome following.”
We can’t do it without you!
Another top priority for February will be hiring a Store Supervisor, Assistant Manager, and Volunteer Coordinator. (Current job openings can be found on our Career page.)
Once the store is staffed, the team will start doing donation drive events. They’ll ensure the experience for donors and shoppers runs smoothly.
We’re also looking for volunteers to help with the store launch and ongoing support. If you’d like to be involved, please join the Tigard ReStore interest list.
“I really hope that people tell their friends, and come out and support us,” Julie said.
