Future Habitat Volunteers Get a Lesson In Giving Back

dsc_0553
The International School in Southwest Portland is teaching their kids about community service. Last month, Habitat AmeriCorps member Kelli Linton went to speak to the 72  3rd graders about the work that Habitat does in the Portland Metro area.
The kids were very excited to learn about building homes and more importantly, helping families. They had dozens of questions about how many homes Habitat builds and how we select our homeowners. The class then got to write messages on 2 x 4’s that will eventually be built into Habitat homes.
Liam, a student at the International School wrote, “You know your job is saving many, many lives. I hope your job continues forever and ever.”
Another classmate states that when he is older he “will be a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity. I hope that you can help many more people in your life.”
Katherine, age 9, wrote “Now that I know about the organization you work at, I know that the people who don’t have a house have a chance at getting one and the most love they’ve felt in a long time.”
Habitat for Humanity is proud to recognize this third grade class for their passion for learning and the kind words they shared. We’re excited and hopeful to see them on a build site when they’re old enough to use a hammer!
