(Portland, Ore.)— With the cold winter weather around the corner, Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East is busy preparing for a special celebration. On November 3, Habitat will celebrate the completion of a 10-home community as over 40 people move into their new, warm Habitat homes just in time for the winter season. The homes are located at Brooklyn Pines in the Jade District of SE Portland. The completion of these homes would not be possible without the support of CBRE, Windermere Realty Trust, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Regence, Umpqua Bank, Wells Fargo, and individual donors and volunteers.
“We are thrilled to help contribute to the economic vitality of SE Portland’s vibrant Jade District,” said Steve Messinetti, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East. “It is critical that we provide more opportunities for families to build stability through affordable homeownership.”
Brooklyn Pines will be home to 10 families. Each family dedicates 300 hours of sweat equity as they build their homes alongside volunteers and later purchase the homes with an affordable mortgage.
Tonya Vercouteren is a nursing assistant and a single mother with three children. She currently lives in an apartment in Southeast Portland with her two sons. Her daughter lives in a medical foster home because she requires constant care. Although Tonya visits her daughter often, she is unable to have her daughter visit their apartment because it is not ADA accessible. Tonya is looking forward to purchasing an ADA accessible home at Brooklyn Pines so that her daughter can be with her family more often.
“There’s finally some peace to know that I will be able to sit next to , have dinner and be with all of my children at the same time,” said Tonya Vercouteren.
