(Portland, Ore.)— At a time when women’s voices are rising around the world, Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East’s Women Build members are coming together locally to swing hammers and raise walls on homes located at Habitat’s Cully Place build site.
“Housing affordability is a critical women’s issue,” stated Lauren Johnson, Habitat’s Senior Donor Engagement Officer. “And what better way to highlight that than right here on the build site on the weekend of International Women’s Day.”
One third of Oregon’s single working mothers and their children live below the poverty line. There are no neighborhoods in Portland where the average single mother can rent or purchase an affordable home. Women–particularly women of color–face disproportionate access to opportunity, which can affect their ability to find a decent place to live. Habitat’s affordable homeownership program directly addresses these disparities and provides opportunities for women to build strength, stability and independence for themselves and their families.
