Just prior to the Christmas holiday weekend, Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East received word that US Senator Jeff Merkley would be stopping by. This year, Senator Merkley and his daughter Brynne challenged each other to complete an Ironman triathlon, and to raise money for local nonprofits in the process. They chose three organizations, including Habitat for Humanity of Oregon, to donate their proceeds to.
It was somewhat of a homecoming for Senator Merkley, who was once the Executive Director of Portland’s Habitat for Humanity affiliate in the early 1990s. While visiting, Senator Merkley and Brynne had the chance to tour a newly remodeled office, a new Homeowner Education Center, as well as a finished home at the Helensview build site in Cully.
Senator Merkley has been a champion for affordable housing for decades, and we’re honored that he and his family have continued to support affordable homeownership in Oregon!
