We know that housing justice is crucial for all. We also know that discrimination against various affinity groups has led to inequitable access to housing for this community. For instance:
- According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, one in 10 transgender people in the United States have been evicted from their homes because of their gender identity. And of our nation’s 1.6 million homeless youth, 20-40% identify as LGBTQ+.
- One third of Oregon’s single working mothers and their children live below the poverty line. Women – particularly women of color – face disproportionate access to opportunity, which can affect their ability to find a decent place to live. Housing affordability is a crucial women’s issue.
Habitat recognizes our part in ending housing discrimination and creating opportunities for all to have a stable and healthy place to call home. We believe our Community Days can offer safer, intentional, and fun spaces for all those who identify within a particular affinity to come together and build community — all while supporting the mission of Habitat for Humanity.
Each affinity group has one large Big Build day on a construction site where 30 community members of similar lived experiences can learn new skills, assist with building homes, and create a supportive and empowering community. No construction experience is required to participate on a build site! These days are ideal for individuals who are new to construction, as there is a tool training component.
Below are our current affinity group days. If you would like to recommend a new affinity group for Community Days, please reach out to us!
