Habitat’s nine-home Lents Landing development at SE 97th Avenue has been selected for the City of Portland’s ninth annual Build It Green! (BIG) home tour. The tour is meant to inform and inspire Portlanders to consider green technologies when building or remodeling homes. The more green housing becomes, the lower the city’s carbon footprint. This translates into a lower regional demand for energy, which slows the need to develop new energy sources and maintains our quality of life.
The selection process was highly competitive, and with several other affordable projects submitted this year, the tour organizers decided to make affordable one of three tour themes, along with small footprint and passive house – an ultra-efficient house using 90% less energy than a conventional house. Habitat is excited to be part of the message that a green home can also be simple and affordable.
The self-guided tour of 21 homes includes a mixture of single- and multi-family homes, remodels and new construction. You can see green historic preservation on a Victorian home, Eurostyling on a modern townhouse, remodeled classic Portland bungalows and more.
Two of Habitat’s Lents homes in progress will be open to feature the Earth Advantage certifiable components including: high-efficiency windows and insulation, solar tubes, transit-oriented siting (the Max line is a short walk), efficient use of space/small footprint, low- and non-toxic finishes, appropriate reduction and diversion of waste from the site and landscaping with bioswales and native plants. There will be informational signs up on the two homes, and Habitat’s knowledgeable and skilled construction staff will be available to answer technical questions about Earth Advantage and green building techniques and materials.
The Habitat project is doubly green since one of the homes on the tour is sponsored by proceeds generated by sales of reclaimed building materials from the Portland Metro ReStore. This will be a great opportunity to explain how the ReStore works and what types of materials are available for purchase.
The tour takes places Saturday, September 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. around the Portland Metro area with the majority of homes in southeast Portland. There is also a free green homes fair held in concert with the tour from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Ecohaus at 819 SE Taylor Street in Portland.
